i've always been committed to community development, whether formally or informally. In the past I was involved, as so many were, in a 'stop the freeway' campaign – this was in Calgary, where the city plan involved twinning 10th St. NW, into two one-way streets, effectively dividing the Hillhurst-Sunnyside area. We managed to stop that iteration of the project, but you wouldn't know it now. The LRT was put in, right in or near the area we had tried so hard to protect. It is as if city planners keep their rejected plans on file and bring them out again, dusting them off 15 or 20 years down the line to try again.
Now I'm engaged in the Gastown Residents Association efforts to convince the City of Vancouver to pull back from the proposed Whitecaps Stadium. This stadium as planned will have serious longterm negative effects on all the heritage efforts to date in Gastown and will make life much more difficult for all residents here, due to crowds and traffic, not to mention parking. 15000 people every 2 or 3 days in spring and summer? Don't get me started.
The press conference today was well attended – can't wait to see the coverage.
