Winter Solstice

Holly King or Green Man

In this year of accellerated climate change and the speedup of the transformations which we are all feeling – greater congestion, need for clean energy sources, dramatic weather patterns, etc. – it’s good to celebrate the solstice, along with all the other festivals of light that occur in this darkest time of the year. When I was checking the exact time of the solstice – is it the 22nd or was it yesterday the 21st, I came upon Eric Weisstein’s World of Astronomy site, which has this little quicktime movie of the tilt of the earth’s equatorial plane, which accounts for the seasons.

Here is Rozhanitza, a Russian goddess of Eastern Europe, with her daughter goddess, who is sometimes a deer. From which has many other great images for this time of year, including the Holly King above.
