My rating: 4 of 5 stars
When I picked up this book it was remaindered at Powell’s, and somehow it intrigued me. Maybe it was the sufi connection, or …? Well it held my concentrated attention beautifully and I see it as a supreme example of plot development, along with actual characters that are more than cardboard cut-outs. There was a reality to this fantasy, and I’m not much of a fan of fantasy fiction. I think the Arab Spring and its reality at the time gave this book a force that it wouldn’t have had otherwise. A poetic section describing the beautiful programming and interconnected layers of the Koran stands alone as a work in itself. The parallels between sacred literature and advanced programming are very intriguing. I totally recommend this as a great read!
